Omega 3 vs Omega 6
The War In Your Body
Sorry for the tough talk, but I use it to make a point. Omega 3 vs Omega 6 is not something to be taken lightly and I hope to motivate those who read this to take it seriously. Because it this war kill you if you just laugh it off.
So who are these two titans squaring off inside?
Meet the enemy/jerk/all around not nice guy: Omega 6
Poor guy didn’t start out this way, in fact he does some important things in our bodies. He causes hormones to be released in our bodies that cause inflammation, blood clotting, and cell growth. Even the inflammation isn’t such a bad thing; this is an important part of our immune system.
The problem in America is we invited him in to hang out at our house in our diet and he has taken over the place. He is in high concentrations in grain feed beef, but mostly in seeds and oils that we eat every day. Almost all processed foods use oil called soy oil. This is a source made up almost entirely of Omega 6. We eat so much of it estimates put it anywhere between 15-25% of the calories we eat. So not only is our primary source of Omega 6 it is one of our primary sources of energy (which calories are).
This is does not bode well for us.
The hormones in question are going rampant now. This causes a huge imbalance in our body. This causes too much inflammation (Which can lead to Arthritis and many similar diseases), an excess of blood clotting, which is a major factor in heart disease (Our number 1 cause of death in America) and excess cell growth (Cancer).
So look at that! Three of the major sources of pain and suffering caused at least in part (There are always other factors) in this war, of Omega 6 vs Omega 3.
So who can help us?
Let’s meet our challenger in this bout: Omega 3
Omega 3 is a shorter chained fatty acid that in this fight neutralizes our enemy. It really isn’t even a fight when this guy gets in the ring in force.
He does the exact opposite of Omega 6 bringing down inflammation, blood clotting, and abnormal cell growth.
On top of this he does many awesome things, like helping our eyes (Omega 3 makes up a large percentage of your eyes), our brain (neurons, those brain cells that exchange information in your brain are made of them!). So how can you help in this war of Omega 3 vs Omega 6?
This is the best part, either reduce your intake of Omega 6 (Which is possible but not easy) and/or increase your intake of Omega 3 (Which is much easier).
You don’t even need to eat a lot of fish but you can also take a lot of good pure supplements. Not just any of the ultra cheap brands, they all could come from sources tainted with heavy metals or even prescription drugs.
At the same time though it is good to reduce your dependence on processed foods.
Another note, don’t worry about taking or eating too much Omega 3, our diets are so out of whack in near close to impossible to overdo. Just keep it within reason unless you are having incredible imbalance issues.
Put these all together you have a strategy that will win the war of Omega 3 vs Omega 6!
